THIRUVEGAPPURA - MY BIRTH PLACE

THIRUVEGAPPURA is a typical Valluvanad village on the bank of river THUTHA, a tributary of BHARATHAPUZHA (also called NILA). Thiruvegappura is famous for a very big Lord Siva Temple with three flag masts as the unique speciality. Load Sankaranarayana and Load Vishnu are the other main deities of the temple. The temple has a very big Koothambalam(Temple theatre) which is a standing example of ancient Kerala architecture. The eight days long annual temple festival (Utsavam) starts with Kodiyettam(flag hoisting) on Uthrattaadi star of Malayalam month Kumbham and ends with Aaraattu(holy bath) in the river Thutha.

It is a historical fact that the famous Sanskrit scholar, Thiruvegappura Anayath Krishna Pisharody, was considered as the Guru(teacher) of Manavedan Raja, the then Zamorin Raja of Kozhikode. It was he who conceived the classical dance drama "Krishnanattam" based on his text Krishnageethi. Mahaakavi Ulloor has mentioned about this in his Kerala Sahithya Charithram(chapter 33). Manavedan Raja has mentioned about his Guru Anayath Krishna Pisharody in his text Poorvabharatha Champu. A commentary to Poorvabharatha Champu, Krishneeyam, was composed apparently by Anayath Krishna Pisharoty.

The place is famous as the birth place of world famous Magician Prof.Vaazhakunnam Neelakantan Namboodiri, Chenda maestros Thiruvegappura Rama Poduval and Sankunni Poduval, poet and Shaakunthalam translator Cheruliyil Kunchunni Nambeesan, Bhagavatham exponent Vazhakunnam Vasudevan Namboodiri and Scientist Dr.T.M.K.Nedungadi, a student and close disciple of Nobel Laureate Prof.C.V.Raman.

Recently, a young and dynamic Ayurveda Physician, Dr.N.N.Devan has started an Ayurveda treatment Centre "ASHOKALAYAM". In a very short span of time the centre has become very popular due to its unique specialities. A lot of famous people from all over the world is coming here to get pure and traditional Ayurvedic treatment.

Thiruvegappura is also famous for its historical importance. The Raayiranellur mountain temple -where Naaraanathu Bhraanthan(The lunatic prophet-one of the great twelve sons of Vararuchi) lived and taught his philosophy to the society in his own way- and Bhraanthaachalam temple(The main dwelling place of Naaraanath Bhraanthan) are historical attractions of this village.
